Community Service

Community Involvement is a cornerstone of the Rutgers tradition. As an alum, whether from Newark, New Brunswick or Camden, you are no doubt familiar with the many opportunities to give back to those less fortunate than ourselves here in the nation's capital. And despite its abundant political, economic and cultural resources, the greater DC metropolitan area still faces the same challenges of any large urban area. Thousands, for instance, grow up in poverty with poor educational prospects while many homeless struggle for dignity on the city's streets and in area shelters. And the Anacostia, Potomac and Chesapeake waterways are just a few of the many local natural resources currently threatened by pollution and neglect.

In an effort to improve the lives of those in need here in our immediate area, the Rutgers Club of DC has participated in many community service and outreach efforts. From cleaning up District schools as part of the Hands on DC initiative, or volunteering for the Christmas in April program, or even serving a meal to homeless individuals at a local shelter, your fellow alumni are committed to strengthening the social capital of Washington, DC.

Events are organized periodically and alumni are notified of volunteer opportunities via email. If you would like to receive notices about upcoming community service events, and/or have ideas for outreach efforts, please contact the club and let us know of your interests. We would be delighted to have Rutgers alumni, their family and friends join us.

Contact Carol Vilsack at cmvilsack@aol.com with your ideas and to volunteer to help.
